What is outplacement and when do you choose it?

Outplacement is professional guidance for employees who are looking for a new job due to dismissal or reorganization, with the support of a coach. Outplacement helps with reorientation, application and processing the dismissal. The employer usually pays the costs.

Why outplacement?

Whether it concerns a reorganization, settlement agreement or long-term absenteeism: outplacement offers structure, perspective and practical help in finding a new job. It prevents downtime and absenteeism and offers space for reorientation.

At Care4Careers, we believe that every departure can be a new beginning — with the right guidance.

In which situations is outplacement used?

Outplacement can be offered voluntarily or at the employer's initiative. Here are the most common scenarios:

In case of dismissal by mutual consent

A settlement agreement often includes a outplacement process included. The employee receives guidance and the employer determines the duration and budget in consultation.

In case of forced dismissal

Although it is not required by law, many employers opt for outplacement as a form of good employment. In this case, employees can use (part of) their transition payment for the process.

After burn-out or long-term failure

Outplacement is also suitable for reintegration after illness or burnout. It offers the opportunity to start over in another field without returning to the old work environment.

In case of reorganization or collective dismissal

Outplacement helps to process the dismissal and guides employees towards new perspectives. Group outplacement offers extra support here through joint workshops and network processes.

For people over 50

For older workers, outplacement can help translate skills and experience into current job market opportunities. With targeted application coaching and reorientation, it increases the chances of a sustainable job.

How does an outplacement process work?

An outplacement process usually consists of five phases:

  1. Intake and analysis: Where are you now? What do you need?
  2. Self-insight: What are your talents, motives and competences?
  3. Reorientation: Which jobs and sectors suit you?
  4. Recruitment guidance: Resume, networking, having conversations
  5. Aftercare and evaluation: Preparing for sustainable employability

At Care4Careers, we always tailor the process to the employee's personal situation, wishes and opportunities.

What does outplacement cost?

The costs of an outplacement process vary. On average, this is between €2,000 and €5,000, depending on:

  • Duration and intensity
  • Individual or group guidance
  • Any aftercare or coaching-on-the-job

Who pays for the route?

In most cases, the employer pays for the process, especially in case of dismissal by mutual consent or reorganization. Employees can also use their transition payment for outplacement, at no extra cost.

Outplacement for employers

As an employer, it is important to say goodbye to employees properly. Outplacement not only helps the employee, but also reduces reputational risks and legal tensions.
