What is the average duration of an outplacement process?

One outplacement process takes an average of 3 to 12 months, depending on the situation, guidance and job market opportunities.

The length of an outplacement process varies from employee to employee. Sometimes 3 months of guidance is sufficient, while 9 to 12 months are common for intensive retraining programs. Factors such as personal circumstances, the labor market and the chosen form of guidance play a major role.

On average, how long does an outplacement process take?

Most outplacement processes have a duration of 6 to 9 months. This gives enough time to process emotions after dismissal, to determine a career direction and to actively approach the labor market. Shorter journeys are possible when someone already knows clearly what step they want to take.

What types of outplacement processes are there?

The duration is strongly related to the form of outplacement. There are roughly three variants:

  • Basic outplacement — focus on job counseling and finding a new job. Duration: often 3 to 6 months.
  • Extensive process — including career scan, coaching and personal development. Duration: usually 6 to 9 months.
  • Intensive process with retraining — for those who want to switch to another field or sector. Duration: often 9 to 12 months.

Which factors influence the duration of outplacement?

An outplacement process can take shorter or longer due to, among other things:

  • Emotional processing: if someone has difficulty with dismissal, the starting phase may take longer.
  • Training or retraining: extra time is required for further training or retraining.
  • Labour market perspective: in a tight labor market, things go faster; with a lot of competition, it takes longer.
  • Health and resilience: after burnout or exhaustion, recovery often takes extra time.
  • Available budget: some employers opt for a shorter journey due to costs.

When is a longer outplacement process necessary?

For employees who are more difficult to mediate, for example due to age, specialization or health problems, a process often takes longer. Even after a reorganization where many colleagues are looking for work at the same time, mediation can take extra time.
